Egg rings are like the breakfast time cousins of the hamburger press. Essentially, they're made for neat freaks who like to have their eggs perfectly shaped, or guys like myself (slobs), who can't fry an egg without getting half of it on the stove top. The egg ring was built with ease and cleanliness in mind. Before we got our set of Amco round egg rings for our wedding, I had no idea what they were, or the wonders they would bring to my breakfast experience.
Using an egg ring, you can cook an egg into a perfect fit for a McMuffin style breakfast sandwich, and it's incredibly easy. If you want to fry it, just crack the shell within the rings and cook it as you normally would. Once the egg is cooked enough to stay together, you can relieve the device of its duties and flip it to your heart's desire. After you've scarfed down your sandwich, just wash off your egg rings like anything else in your kitchen. Most models, like the Amco one I mentioned, have a stick free surface and are dishwasher safe. Not to mention, they're large enough to cook up an egg, but the clever design allows you to fit them in nearly any set of kitchen drawers or cabinets (unless they're already overflowing like mine).
Now, don't let the name fool ya. Eggs aren't all you can cook up in an egg ring. These suckers are very popular for other saucer shaped foods as well. Pancakes, for instance, are a breeze when cooking them with egg rings. Just pour the batter into the pan within the ring, and remove it when it's firm enough to flip. If you're blessed enough to have children who want to make you breakfast in bed, make sure they know where the egg rings are first. They may cook it for you, but something tells me you'll be cleaning it up.
My favorite thing about cooking egg rings is that you no longer have to make your food wait in line to be cooked. Ya heard right! With a 4 egg ring model, you can make yourself two eggs, a pancake, and hash browns all in the same pan. The stainless steel keeps your food separated, allowing you to save a ton of time whipping up that breakfast of champions. You champion, you!
If you're looking to buy egg rings, which I'm sure you are now, you can find them in most mega stores like Wal Mart and Target for under $10. I believe Target is where our Amco round egg rings were purchased for us, but I know for a fact that they sell them on Amazon for less than $7.00. Go check it out, and getcha one!
Here's a Quick How To On Cooking With an Egg Ring:
- You can use this method for cooking either scrambled eggs, pancakes, or french toast - basically anything that allows you to pour in a premixed batter. We'll use scrambled eggs for the same of simplicity - these make a great addition to breakfast sandwiches.
- Lightly apply butter, oil, or bacon grease (yum!) to the interior of the egg ring.
- Go ahead and butter/grease up the skillet on which you'll be using to cook as well. We'll go ahead and make these delicious.
- Turn the burner on medium for a minute to heat the butter, and place the rings you'll be using within the pan.
- Scramble your eggs in a bowl away from the skillet, and pour them in once they're consistency is nice and airy. You can use this opportunity to throw in a little cheese or some veggies for extra flavor.
- Pour the whipped up contents from the bowl into the egg rings and let it sit until it firms up.
- Once it starts to set, put on some cooking gloves and remove the egg ring, flip the egg over, and repeat. The whole process on both sides typically takes about five minutes or less.
- That's all there is to it. Enjoy!
